Start with when electricity is used
Solar panels generate during daylight. If pool filtration, water heating, cooling and other large loads already run in those hours, the property may consume a substantial share directly.
Storage becomes more relevant when regular demand continues after production falls. Interval data from the meter, where available, can show the evening load more accurately than a monthly bill.
Usable capacity should match the job
Battery sizing follows the surplus available to charge it and the electricity normally required later. A larger unit is not necessarily more useful if it rarely reaches a full charge or remains partly unused for much of the year.
High-demand appliances can empty storage quickly when they run together. The design should model realistic combinations rather than presenting the battery capacity without reference to household loads.
Backup power needs its own design
Installing a battery does not automatically keep the whole villa operating during a power cut. Backup depends on the inverter, switching arrangement and circuits selected.
Refrigeration, lighting, internet equipment, gates and selected sockets are common priorities. Large cooling systems, ovens and pool equipment may remain outside the backed-up supply unless the complete system is designed to support them.
Holiday homes need a different comparison
A second home can have high evening use during visits and very little demand while empty. Storage may improve comfort or backup during occupied periods without producing the same financial case as it would in a full-time home.
Remote monitoring is valuable, but it does not create demand for stored energy. The analysis should include the quiet months rather than assuming year-round occupancy.
Physical and virtual batteries are different
A physical battery stores electricity at the villa. A virtual battery is an electricity-supplier billing arrangement that assigns value to exported surplus under the provider’s current terms.
A virtual balance cannot power the property during an outage. A physical battery may provide backup where the installation has been configured for it. Tariff products change, so any comparison needs current supplier information.
Panels alone can be the right first stage
Some systems are designed for direct daytime consumption with space or compatible equipment left for storage later. This can avoid paying for a battery before the villa’s actual solar surplus is known.
The quotation should show panels alone and storage separately. That makes the extra cost, expected increase in self-consumption and backup scope visible.

Does every solar system need a battery?
No. Properties with strong daytime demand can use much of their solar generation directly.
Will a battery run my villa during a power cut?
Only if the system includes the required backup equipment and circuit design. Capacity and the loads running at the time still limit operation.
Can storage be added later?
Often, but compatibility with the installed inverter, electrical layout and proposed battery must be checked. Planning for that possibility during the initial design can keep the options open.
